Usually a layered system: rigid foam on the foundation walls, spray foam at the rim joists, then batts in any framed walls. Rigid foam keeps the concrete warm to prevent condensation, closed-cell foam air-seals the rim joists, and mineral wool or fibreglass adds affordable R-value and sound control.
Closed-cell spray foam is a common choice because it handles cold surfaces and moisture exposure better than many fibrous products. It still needs the correct fire-protection and finishing details, which we take care of.
Yes. Air sealing and wall insulation reduce stack-effect drafts and heat loss, which warms the floors above and steadies temperatures throughout the house.
Closed-cell is denser, offers a higher R-value per inch (roughly R-6+), and resists moisture — ideal for basements and rim joists. Open-cell is lighter and cheaper (around R-3.5–4 per inch) and better suited to interior sound control. We recommend the right one for each surface.
